DRIFT's 'Aeolus' Brings Interactive Light and Glass to London's Carpenters at Ladbroke Hall

exhibition · 2026-10-19

Suspended glass rods containing tiny lights form the core of 'Aeolus,' an interactive installation by Amsterdam-based studio DRIFT on view through October 25 at Carpenters inside Ladbroke Hall in London. Visitors' movements trigger the illumination, making the piece respond to human presence rather than operate independently. The title references the ancient Greek god of the wind, and the work pairs elemental rhythms with manufactured materials to prompt reflection on humanity's relationship with natural systems. Founders Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta describe the piece as existing fully only through interaction, calling it simultaneously still and in motion, fixed yet constantly shifting. Their material choices reinforce that theme: glass can appear spectral in its clarity, while light, like wind, is immaterial and transient. Beyond the London presentation, the studio has announced the DRIFT Museum, an 8,000-square-meter institution planned for the Van Gendt Hallen in Amsterdam, with an opening targeted for early 2027. Updates on the project and the installation are being shared via DRIFT's Instagram account.
