Doyle Lane Retrospective at The Huntington Surveys Ceramicist's Evolution

The Huntington is currently hosting "Doyle Lane: Master of Clay," marking the most extensive display of Lane's ceramics ever, which will be available until March 1, 2027. This exhibition showcases over 100 artworks and archival pieces, chronicling Lane's evolution from making everyday pottery to designing impressive murals, emphasizing his shift towards abstract and radiant ceramic forms. Highlights include his famous "weed pots," jewelry, personal vessels, and significant architectural works. The event places Lane within the framework of midcentury California modernism and the Southern California studio ceramics scene, while also exploring the hurdles he faced as a Black artist. Noteworthy pieces include a butterfly clay painting from around 1970 and a colorful pyramid relief from roughly 1965 to 1970, both captured by Jeff McLane and part of Lane's estate.
