Downtown Brooklyn's Skyline: A Missed Architectural Opportunity

Over the last twenty years, Downtown Brooklyn has evolved, resulting in a skyline filled with uninspired high-rises. After the rezoning by the Bloomberg Administration in 2003, the area's population increased fivefold, but the office market struggled, highlighted by the foreclosure of the class-A building at 141 Willoughby Street. Although 22,000 new apartments were constructed, critics have labeled the architectural style as 'Consensus Clunkism,' pointing to examples such as The Rocklyn at 20 Rockwell Place and the tower by Beyer Blinder Belle at Flatbush and Fulton. While Studio Gang's 11 Hoyt is visually impressive, it pulls back from the street. Notable exceptions include Alloy's 505 State Street, the first all-electric skyscraper. Recent enhancements, like a $40 million streetscape upgrade and the launch of Abolitionist Place, have not alleviated the area's sense of congestion and emptiness.
