dongqi Design Transforms Three Shanghai Buildings into Mixed-Use Complex

architecture-design · 2026-10-06

In Shanghai's historic district, dongqi Design has completed an impressive renovation of 600 m², merging three separate buildings into a versatile complex that offers retail, exhibition, dining, and office areas. Finished in 2025, the project showcases a three-story brick-concrete building on the southern side, an 8-meter-high factory, and a northern single-story brick-concrete structure. The ground level of the three-story building is for leisure activities, while offices occupy the upper floors. The factory houses a retail section and a private VIP room, and the north building is focused on catering. JIANG Nan headed the architectural team, which included several members, while structural engineering was handled by XinY Structural Consultants and Beijing Dragon Decoration took the lead as the contractor. 韩爽 (HAN Shuang) curated the project, with photography by Yasu Kojima. This renovation highlights the city's movement toward adaptive reuse in a tight urban landscape.
