DLR Group's Middle East Urbanism: From Megaprojects to Intimate Neighborhoods

In a conversation with designboom, leaders from DLR Group addressed the topic of urban density in the Middle East, asserting that the real challenge lies in repetitive design rather than density itself. Henrique Dias pointed out the importance of fostering connections between users and their environments. Stefan du Toit mentioned that landscape can serve as an interface to mitigate large volumes. This design philosophy is evident in their projects, including EMAAR – The Heights in Dubai, a 750-hectare development featuring over 7,500 residences; SUMOU in Al Khobar and LIWAN Najd in Riyadh, both designed with car-free networks; MAAD in Makkah, which adapts to the landscape; and The Point in Abha, influenced by Al-Qatt Al-Asiri art. Vaida Buchrotaite remarked that interiors in spiritual sites enhance journeys, while Shawn Meyers emphasized the need for integrated workflows to create functional and aesthetically pleasing streets.
