Diriondostudio Exposes 1965 Concrete Beams in Logroño Apartment Renovation
Diriondostudio, led by architect David Domínguez Iriondo, transformed a deteriorated 90-square-metre apartment in a 1965 Logroño building into Vivienda GV65. Instead of hiding the structural concrete beams (up to 50 cm deep) behind a dropped ceiling, the studio exposed them, achieving ceiling heights up to 270 cm. The original floor plan, unchanged since construction per municipal archive drawings, featured a windowless entrance hall, a long dark corridor, and three undersized bedrooms. The studio reorganized the unit into a day-and-night split with two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, relocating the kitchen to the day zone with terrace access. Natural light was maximized using high-gloss enamel ceilings and continuous microquartz flooring. A sage green accent color, walnut wood, brushed stainless steel, and Carrara marble define the material palette. Furniture includes pieces by Faye Toogood, Arne Jacobsen, and USM Haller, with lighting by Achille Castiglioni, Tommaso Cimini, and others. The only decorative object is Prinse I by Ángela Suárez from Galería Belmonte. The studio cited Donald Judd-inspired minimalism and an art-gallery sensibility as references. The original 1965 drawings, retrieved from Logroño's municipal archive, now only survive on paper.
