Dior's Cigale Bag: Jonathan Anderson Translates 1952 Couture into Modern Accessory

Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Dior, has reimagined Christian Dior's monumental 'Cigale' gown from the Autumn/Winter 1952 collection as a handbag. The original dress, named after the French word for cicada, was a heavy mercury-grey moiré creation with architectonic jutting hips and a razored graphic form, softened by a ribbon bow at the waist. Anderson, fascinated by the gown for years, previously translated its cut into chino shorts and now into a leather bag featuring oblique seams as stitching details and an abstracted bow. The hardware includes an oversized 'O' eyelet that helps spell 'Dior' in gold, referencing Jean Cocteau's comment that the couturier's name combined 'Dieu' (God) and 'Or' (gold).
