DHaus Designs Nanjing Townhouse Interior with Carlo Scarpa Influence

DHaus has completed the interior of a townhouse in Nanjing's historic Mendong district, China, as part of a 50-unit development by a Chinese developer. The studio was commissioned after completing the masterplan and exterior elevations. The design draws on Carlo Scarpa's principles of craftsmanship, dialogue between old and new, and choreographed movement. Three initial concepts—a library, a gallery, and a sculptural interpretation from a Paris apartment—were merged into a final layout centered on a triple-height atrium. A sculptural staircase with an enlarged first step references Scarpa's thresholds. The interior features curved geometries, timber, and crafted materials, creating a domestic environment focused on spatial movement and material expression. The project was informed by an earlier residential commission in Paris, which began when a client purchased a DHaus table in Le Marais.
