Delcy Morelos' 'Uterus in Uterus' at Bozar: An Immersive Earth Installation

Colombian artist Delcy Morelos (b. 1967) has created 'Uterus in Uterus', a monumental earth installation at Bozar in Brussels, part of the Bozar Monumental series. The work, visible for free until August 30, 2026, consists of a trapezoidal structure made from organic materials: hazelnut panels covered with cob, and eight tons of red clay and sand sourced locally from Wallonia by BC materials. Visitors enter barefoot, passing through a low corridor that forces them to bow, into a central space with walls 4.40 meters high, 14 meters long, and 9 meters wide. Only eight people are allowed inside at a time. The installation is accompanied by the scent of cinnamon. Curator Zoë Gray invited Morelos after seeing her work at the 2022 Venice Biennale. The artist emphasizes local materials and draws inspiration from Amazonian malocas, Mesoamerican pyramids, and Egyptian mastabas. Morelos, born in Tierralta, Colombia, studied at the Beaux-Arts in Cartagena and works with living materials to honor ancestral knowledge. She critiques anthropocentrism and aims to reconnect visitors with the earth. The work is curated by Emma Dumartheray.
