Delcy Morelos Hand-Molds 30-Tonne Soil Installation at Barbican

At the Barbican Centre's Sculpture Court in London, Colombian artist Delcy Morelos has unveiled 'Origo', a striking installation measuring 24 metres in width and composed of over 30 tonnes of spice-infused soil and clay. Morelos and her team meticulously hand-moulded the organic, oval structure over a month, featuring a significant central void. This four-metre-tall piece rests on a recessed base, giving it a floating appearance. Inspired by ancient burial sites, openings lead to internal tunnels and a courtyard, inviting visitors to explore the aromatic interior. The blend includes soil, hay, clay, plant seeds, and spices like cinnamon and cloves, creating a 'sensory encounter'. Curator Diego Chocano remarked that the design reflects architectural elements from the estate, fostering respect and reciprocity with the materials.
