Christian Bernard, the esteemed French curator and founder of Geneva's Musée d'art moderne et contemporain (Mamco), passed away on August 6, 2026, at the age of 76 following a prolonged illness. He was born in Strasbourg in 1950 and initially worked as a teacher before transitioning to cultural administration. His career included roles as an advisor for visual arts in Rhône-Alpes from 1982 to 1985 and as the director of Villa Arson in Nice from 1985 to 1994. Bernard established Mamco, which opened its doors on September 22, 1994, and he led it until 2015, refreshing galleries three times a year. He also organized significant exhibitions and managed Printemps de septembre in Toulouse during 2008-2009 and 2016-2021. In June 2026, he was awarded the Académie française's Grand Prix de Poésie and authored several publications.
