Dawn Ng's Melting Ice and Pigment Works at Gana Art Hannam

Singapore-based artist Dawn Ng explores the passage of time through melting ice, pigments, photography, and film. Her solo exhibition 'The Earth Laughs at Flowers' at Gana Art Hannam in Seoul runs from August 6 to September 9, 2026. The show features photographs from her 'Into Air' series (2017–2023), displayed in lightboxes to capture three stages of melting ice blocks layered with sand and pigments. Also on view are 12 large-scale paintings created throughout 2025, each made by breaking ice and pigment over wooden panels and allowing them to melt, leaving cascades of color resembling riverbeds and geological formations. Each painting corresponds to a month of 2025, transforming personal experiences into permanent records. The works are displayed against a dark backdrop, making colors stand out like galaxies. Ng's practice stems from Singapore's lack of seasonal variation, prompting her to make time visible. In a documentary, she reflects on humanity's attempt to own land and time, but ultimately the Earth has the last laugh as we return to it. The exhibition is open until September 9, 2026.
