Dawit Abebe Traces Ethiopian-Venetian Links as AKKA Project Resident

Dawit Abebe, an Ethiopian artist, is the 13th artist-in-residence at AKKA Project for the 2026 Venice Biennale Arte, where he delves into the historical ties between Ethiopia and Venice. His project, BLACKBOX, is inspired by the intricate histories, cultural memories, and material textures of Venice. Abebe draws from elements such as maps, masks, Murano glass, and the relationship between the Lion of Judah and the Lion of Saint Mark. He explored the era when Ethiopian monks imparted knowledge in Venice and highlighted the contributions of Venetian artist Niccolò Brancaleone, who connected Renaissance and Ethiopian art. His practice blends archival materials and found objects to convey memory. The exhibition will be open at AKKA Projects in Venice until 31 July 2026.
