Davide Pepe on Decomposing Time and Light in Cinematic Image

In an interview with exibart, Italian artist Davide Pepe discussed his approach to transforming cinematic images through custom software that disintegrates and reconstructs frames, creating a unique temporal and spatial experience. Born in Puglia in 1970, Pepe has shown work at festivals like the Berlinale (Panorama and Shorts Competition) and venues including the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Düsseldorf, the State Archives of Florence, MCA Chicago, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Barbican Centre in London. He has performed live visuals for Current 93, Nurse with Wound, and Diamanda Galás, including at Primavera Sound in Barcelona in June 2023. His theoretical interests include St. Augustine's concept of materia informis and the work of filmmaker Derek Jarman. Pepe studied Information Science in Bologna and programs his own software to control the creative process, avoiding AI. Upcoming, he will collaborate with David Tibet on the exhibition Hallucinate, Children at DOX Center for Contemporary Art in Prague in November, presenting films and video portraits of band members.
