David Hockney Dies at 87; Fondation Louis Vuitton Show Was Among Last Major Exhibitions

David Hockney died yesterday at his home in London. The artist, who continued painting landscapes and portraits until his death, had a major exhibition, "David Hockney 25," at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris last April. His most recent show, "Some Very, Very, Very New Paintings Not Yet Shown in Paris," ran at the Annely Juda Gallery in London from November through February of this year. The news comes shortly after the death of Calvin Tomkins (known as Tad), the New Yorker writer who had profiled many contemporary art giants. Tomkins died on March 20, finishing his book "Centenarian" (to be published in February) and a diary about his hundredth year for The New Yorker. In a final Zoom interview last spring, Hockney wore a turquoise sweater and bespoke plaid suit from his tailor in Cannes, chain-smoking cigarettes. He wore a lapel pin reading "End Bossiness Soon," explaining that "End Bossiness Now" seemed too bossy. The conversation between Hockney and Tomkins, described as "two old guys talking about life in the art world," never happened as planned.
