David Hockney, British Artist and Style Icon, Dies at 88

David Hockney, the revolutionary British artist known for his vibrant style and impact on fashion, has died at age 88. Hockney first appeared in Vogue in 1963, described as an 'Impact Maker' alongside painters Howard Hodgkin, John Howlin, and Ian Stephenson. He dyed his hair blond in the late 1960s after seeing a Clairol ad, creating his signature look. His influence on fashion is vast: Burberry's former creative director Christopher Bailey cited Hockney as inspiration for a spring 2014 collection, and Harry Styles wore hand-painted Bode cords featuring Hockney's illustration for his 2020 Vogue cover. Hockney painted Styles for the National Portrait Gallery's 2020 exhibition 'Drawing from Life.' He designed sets for plays including 'Ubu Roi' at the Royal Court Theatre, 'Parade' and 'Les Mamelles de Tirésias' at the Théâtre du Châtelet, and a stained glass window for Westminster Abbey. His work was exhibited at the Pompidou Centre, the Van Gogh Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery. He received an honorary degree from the University of Leeds in 2000. Hockney was known for his colorful, mismatched outfits, round glasses, and love of dachshunds.
