David Chipperfield Architects Marks 15 Years of Hepworth Wakefield and Turner Contemporary with Short Film
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of two landmark projects, The Hepworth Wakefield in West Yorkshire and Turner Contemporary in Margate, David Chipperfield Architects has unveiled a short film in collaboration with Dezeen. Both galleries, which opened in 2011 just weeks apart, have significantly influenced the studio's later designs. The film features interviews with staff and visitors, including Katie Barber from Turner Contemporary, who highlights the gallery's role in revitalizing Margate despite initial local skepticism. "Turner Contemporary was conceived in the mid 2000s," she remarks, noting the area's previous struggles. The studio emphasizes the shared civic goals and sculptural designs of both buildings, which prioritize natural light. "Fifteen years on, both museums have exceeded expectations," they stated. Founded in 1985, the practice has also recently converted a historic Spanish bank into the Faro Santander museum and is working on the Nobel Center in Sweden. The film was crafted by Household Pictures, featuring cinematography by Jude O'Connor and Luke Harrison Darby, with editing by Kate Contadini and sound design by Steven Villacís.
