Daryn Roongrawewan crafts ornamental icons from vintage references and nature

Daryn Roongrawewan, a designer based in Berlin, specializes in crafting brand identities she refers to as 'ornamental icons,' inspired by vintage aesthetics and elements from nature. For Atelier Lin, a floral boutique, she delved into Slavic alphabets to create unique initials featuring 'ornamental curves for softness and grace, yet intentionally rigid edges, resembling carved metal.' The care cards draw from Victorian carpet bedding designs and monograms, while illustrations take cues from 1920s children's literature. The custom 'L' in Lin transforms into various floral shapes, becoming an ornamental icon. For Padma, an eco-focused art and design studio in Los Angeles, she looked to nature for the logo's design, stating, 'Nature already holds the shape of letters.' The final logo is inspired by the purple sugar magnolia snap pea, complemented by a wordmark that reflects plant stem nodes. Roongrawewan incorporated clay and raw textures for Padma's website, emphasizing, 'Every mark should mean something,' as she believes that visual forms in nature exude a warmth that resonates with people.
