Daniel Toole Architecture's 16-Unit Infill Housing in Portland Challenges Multifamily Norms
In Portland, Oregon, a new residential project has been completed by Daniel Toole Architecture (DTA) at 7480 North Delaware Avenue, addressing the city's ongoing affordability issues. This 4-story structure comprises 16 one-bedroom units across 8,600 square feet, showcasing a facade made of corrugated metal and private timber decks that overlook a courtyard. The project involved landscape design by Outdoor Scenery, construction by Tieton, and engineering by TM Rippey. DTA's innovative design deviates from conventional multifamily housing, incorporating standalone egress stairs and single-loaded walkways to improve light and air flow. Toole referred to this design as a novel urban living concept, contributing to a series that examines high-density housing. DTA is also working on another project at 2630 North Lombard.
