Daniel Libeskind Named 2026 Praemium Imperiale Architecture Laureate

The Japan Art Association has honored Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind with the 2026 Praemium Imperiale for architecture. Recognized for his "emotionally resonant, innovative, and sustainable" designs, Libeskind is the founder of Studio Libeskind in New York. Born in 1946 in Łódź, Poland, he is celebrated for his deconstructionist approach featuring sharp angles and geometric forms. His prominent works include the Jewish Museum Berlin (2001) and the Bundeswehr Museum of Military History (2011), along with recent projects like Maggie's Centre in London and the Atrium at Sumner in Brooklyn. Libeskind will receive an honorarium of 15 million yen (around £70,000), presented by Prince Hitachi. Other laureates for 2026 include Cate Blanchett, Herbert Blomstedt, Andy Goldsworthy, and Jenny Holzer. The Praemium Imperiale is an esteemed global arts award encompassing various disciplines, and La Source Garouste has been chosen for the 2026 Grant for Young Artists. Previous architecture winners include Eduardo Souto de Moura, Shigeru Ban, and Diébédo Francis Kéré.
