Dana Schutz's 'Trouble and Appearance' at Pinakothek der Moderne

The Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich presents 'Trouble and Appearance,' Dana Schutz's first museum exhibition in the city, running in 2026. Curated by Michael Hering of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München, the show highlights Schutz as a draughtsman, featuring over a dozen new charcoal murals, including 'Sky' and 'Catcher' (nearly 3 by 5.5 meters), alongside ten large oil paintings from recent years (e.g., 'The Health' and 'The Hand' from 2026) and a series of twelve unique watercolor monotypes created with Two Palms. The centerpiece is the bronze sculpture 'Sea Group' (2022), acquired from Art Basel. Schutz cites German Expressionists Max Beckmann and Georg Baselitz as major influences; her painting 'Mid-Day' (2019) was shown in Berlin at Contemporary Fine Arts in the 2019 exhibition 'Max Beckmann im Dialog.' The exhibition also references Schutz's controversial 2017 Whitney Biennale painting 'Open Casket,' depicting Emmett Till. At Art Basel 2026, David Zwirner reported selling a new Schutz painting for $350,000 and a work on paper for $100,000. Schutz lives and works in Brooklyn with her husband, sculptor Ryan Johnson.
