Dallas Architect Russell Buchanan Encases 1903 Victorian in Aluminum Shell to Save It
In 2023, structural engineers found a 1903 red brick Victorian house in Dallas's Cedars neighborhood on the verge of collapse. The property, acquired in 2021 by restaurateur Shannon Wynne and his partner Casey McManemin, suffered from extensive water damage and structural problems. Architect Russell Buchanan suggested dismantling the house and reconstructing it within a contemporary aluminum framework. The original structure, now reduced to about one-third of its 3,800 square feet, was carefully documented and rebuilt on a solid foundation. The design retains historical features while introducing a gallery-like area. Although Wynne and McManemin are contemplating future uses, the residence is currently habitable. Buchanan's design was influenced by European protective buildings, emphasizing the significance of architectural preservation.
