Dale Emmart's Rope-Themed Residency at Two Coats of Paint in April 2026

Two Coats of Paint will host artist Dale Emmart as a resident from April 13 to 20, 2026, at their Long Island City studio. Emmart's practice involves a deep exploration of rope as a subject across various media including oil painting, ink on washi paper, woodcuts, and artist books. She views rope as a highly versatile pictorial element with diverse symbolic meanings, ranging from industriousness and energy to entanglement and freedom. Historically, rope has been depicted by artists such as Rembrandt, Miró, and Marsden Hartley, often representing human effort or serving as central compositional elements. Emmart's current work emphasizes a neutral, observational approach where rope is presented without explicit functional context, allowing for ambiguous interpretations that hint at broader human narratives. The residency will feature an open studio event on April 15, 2026, from 5 to 7 PM. Emmart has upcoming exhibitions scheduled at Caldwell University in January 2027 and The Painting Center in April 2027. The residency is organized by Sharon Butler, who is both a painter and the publisher of Two Coats of Paint.
