Dai Zheng's LandSpace Achieves First Chinese Commercial Rocket Booster Recovery

On August 19, a significant achievement was marked by LandSpace, a private space company from China, as it successfully retrieved a rocket booster that returned from orbit and landed in an upright position. This event represents a groundbreaking moment in the history of Chinese commercial space endeavors. The accomplishment affirmed the ten-year risk taken by Dai Zheng, who transitioned from his esteemed role at CALT (China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology) in 2014 to join the fledgling startup. As the chief architect of the Long March 5, China's inaugural heavy-lift rocket, Dai emphasized the importance of reusability for lowering launch expenses and aiding Beijing's plans for extensive satellite networks. This landing came after an arduous eight-month recovery following a crash during a failed launch attempt in December. Dai shared that resigning from the state system was a deeply emotional experience, recalling tears shed the night before as he laid out his awards, expressing to CCTV that he never anticipated leaving the state aerospace field.
