Cynthia Nixon on 'The Gilded Age,' New York Real Estate, and Her Favorite Miranda Moment

Cynthia Nixon, the 60-year-old actor known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in 'Sex and the City' and its spin-off 'And Just Like That…', now stars as Ada Forte in HBO's 'The Gilded Age,' which premiered in 2022 and is airing its fourth season this winter. In an interview with CULTURED, Nixon discussed the show's growing fandom, her political activism, and her life in New York. She revealed she is a tea drinker, has lived in Manhattan her whole life—on the Upper West Side until age 40, then downtown for 11 years, and now in Kips Bay. She described her character Ada as the moral foil to the show's status-obsessed elite. Nixon ran unsuccessfully for New York governor in 2018, challenging Andrew Cuomo, and said she has no plans to run again. She expressed optimism about young people in politics and praised the reception of Zohran Mamdani. On Manhattan's changes, she criticized the real estate market, noting many closed businesses and suggesting penalties for landlords who leave commercial spaces vacant. She also shared her favorite Miranda moment: season two, when Miranda buys her own apartment. Nixon mentioned that her former co-star Kristin Davis has a podcast and had never rewatched the show until recently. She noted that Trump once appeared on 'Sex and the City' and presented her with her first Emmy. The interview took place at Little Ruby's in Murray Hill, where she ordered a Green Eggs Bowl with smoked salmon. Photography was by Bronwen Wickstrom.
