A cyber attack targeting Alliance Distribution Services (ADS), a branch of Hachette Australia, disrupted the distribution of books nationwide, impacting independent bookstores and authors just before Christmas. This unauthorized breach took place on July 18, 2026. Jaye Chin-Dusting from Mary Martin Bookshop noted that she received merely 15 to 20 percent of her regular inventory, with a focus on new releases. Due to uncertainty regarding stock, children's author Danielle Binks had to cancel her school visits in Adelaide. Maxine Beneba Clarke expressed concerns about the financial impact on emerging authors via Instagram. Although Hachette Australia issued an apology, they did not specify when a resolution would be reached. Cybersecurity specialist Matthew Warren indicated that ransomware might be involved. Booksellers are now turning to alternatives like Booktopia, leading to increased expenses. This event highlights the weaknesses present in the publishing supply chain.
