Cubitts opens The Yard, a hybrid workspace and spectacle hub in London

British spectacle maker Cubitts has opened The Yard, its new headquarters near King's Cross, London, on 25 June 2026. The 21st-century workspace blends frame making, lens production, design, repair, consultation, exhibition, and training under one roof. Founder Tom Broughton, who founded Cubitts in King's Cross in 2013, sought a bespoke home after outgrowing the previous studio. The building, a former Victorian stables once part of the Crosse & Blackwell vinegar brewery, was renovated with studio 51 Architecture, preserving its utilitarian brick character. The interior features a central double-height 'plaza' housing the frame-making workshop, surrounded by production facilities and an optical laboratory. Upstairs includes desks, a kitchen, and entertaining area, with potential apartments for guests and residencies. Collaborators include paint maker Simon March, who matched a yellow hue to a 1960s Brigitte Bardot dress, and artist David Shrigley, who created a large cockerel mural. A built-in bench, locally called 'the seat of wisdom,' invites community engagement. Broughton emphasizes enabling human potential and fostering relationships, with the office occupying only 15% of the building.
