Cuauhtémoc Medina to Curate Guatemala's Bienal de Arte Paiz 25th Edition
The 25th Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala is set to run from November 2027 to February 2028, with Mexican curator Cuauhtémoc Medina at the helm. This year is particularly special as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Fundación Paiz, the non-profit behind the event. Medina, a researcher at UNAM since 1993, has previously served as the first associate curator for Latin American art at Tate Modern and the chief curator at MUAC until 2024. Established in 1978, the biennial is the sixth oldest in the world and second in Latin America, having shifted from a competition to a curated format in 2008. Sonia Hurtarte, the executive director, emphasized the need to reevaluate the biennial's relevance today.
