Crux South Climbing Gym Opens in Austin, Designed by Derrington Building Studio
Derrington Building Studio has completed Crux South, a 40,000-square-foot climbing gym on a former gravel lot in Austin, Texas, with a projected completion year of 2026. The project, described as the brand's most ambitious to date, consolidates several programs on a single site: a climbing gym, the local café Switchback Coffee, space reserved for a future tenant, and an outdoor plaza for food trucks. The design team comprises Minta Stohrer and Michael Rahmatoulin, with Tim Derrington as principal architect. Structural engineering is by Structures TX, MEP by Aptus Engineering, and additional consulting by Acton Partners and Contour Collective Accessibility Consultants, with lighting by Spectrum Lighting. Aday and Associates served as general contractor. Photography is by Leonid Furmansky, and the project is curated by Susanna Moreira for ArchDaily. The scheme is intended to turn the former gravel site into a neighborhood node centered on movement, gathering, and community.
