Cristina Umaña Durán turns breath into sculpture at Arte Abierto Pedregal

Cristina Umaña Durán (Bogotá, 1993) presents 'Los tiempos del aire' at Arte Abierto Pedregal in Mexico City, an exhibition of large inflatable sculptures that expand and contract like breathing organisms. The works were inspired by her sister's apnea episodes, which made her perceive air as a sculptural material. The Colombian artist, now based in Mexico, explores fragility, tension between presence and absence, and the perception of time through pauses. The inflatables, made of fabric, hover between the familiar and the uncanny, evoking organs, wounds, and anxiety. The title references a Colombian expression 'los tiempos del ruido' (the times of noise), a myth from 1687. The installation is housed in a shopping center, contrasting consumerism with the ephemeral. The show runs until August 30, 2026.
