Crazy Rich Asians TV Series Set at HBO with Original Film Stars Returning
HBO has greenlit an eight-episode TV series adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians, with Constance Wu and Henry Golding reprising their lead roles as Rachel and Nick. Ronny Chieng returns as Eddie, and Michelle Yeoh will appear in a recurring capacity as Eleanor, Nick's mother. The show, which continues the story after the 2018 film, is co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros Television. Adele Lim, co-writer of the film, serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside the film's director Jon M Chu. Lim described the project as a "Crazy Rich family reunion" and the long-awaited sequel, noting it will explore the characters and worlds from Kevin Kwan's novels across the eight episodes. Chu said the original film "changed his life" and praised the cast's subsequent achievements, adding that reuniting them "feels like coming home." Production is scheduled to begin next year. The announcement came days after Warner Bros, HBO's parent company, revealed a £110bn merger with Paramount Skydance. Casey Bloys, co-chair and chief content officer of Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, commented on the stars' global appeal and fan anticipation. The original film, based on Kwan's bestsellers written between 2013 and 2017, topped the US box office, earned two Golden Globe nominations, and won best comedy at the 2019 Critics Choice Awards. Its all-Asian cast told the story of an Asian-American woman experiencing culture shock while meeting her boyfriend's wealthy family in Singapore.
