Counter City: Feminist Spatial Critique at Galerie Neu, Berlin

The group exhibition "Counter City" at Galerie Neu in Berlin brings together artists across generations to critique and reimagine the patriarchal structures embedded in urban space. Curated around intersectional feminist thought, the show features works by Cosima von Bonin, Sophy Rickett, Pippa Garner, Reba Maybury, Jana Euler, Anita Steckel, Lena Tutunjian, Klara Lidén, G. B. Jones, and Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings. Von Bonin's "Deeskalationstraining (Shark Lock)" (2007) presents a metallic gate framing an empty shark pool, while Rickett's "Pissing Women" (1995) documents herself and friends urinating standing up at sites of power in London. Garner's "Future Man!" (1987) critiques corporate masculinity through surgically modified suits. Maybury's "From Paris with Love" (2022) reworks Toulouse-Lautrec's "Medical Examination" using paint-by-numbers kits delegated to her submissives. Euler's "Greetings from Frankfurt" (2018) depicts the European Central Bank as a phallic emblem. Steckel's 1970s works confront power in New York as a Jewish woman. Tutunjian's "she_stays_underground" (2017) films London's underground as a libidinal space. Lidén's "Verdebelvedere Exit" (2024) shows her wedging through building walls in New York. Jones's films center queer subjectivities in Toronto. Quinlan & Hastings's fresco "The Conquest" (2023) stages public violence and resistance. The exhibition runs until July 4, 2026.
