Corgan's All-Electric Hollywood Burbank Airport Terminal Opens with Art by Glenn Kaino and Cliff Garten

architecture-design · 2026-10-14

Corgan, in collaboration with CannonDesign and Burns & McDonnell, joined forces with HPTJV to create a new terminal for Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), spanning 355,000 square feet and featuring 14 gates, which replaces the original terminal built in 1930. The $1.3 billion structure, which opened yesterday, is among the first all-electric terminals in the U.S. aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions. Its design incorporates a sweeping entry canopy and angled columns reflecting local architectural styles. Electrification encompasses kitchen heating, EV charging, and ground service equipment powered by solar panels. Passive design strategies include high-performance windows, solar shading, and LED lighting. The entrance hall displays sculptures by Glenn Kaino and Cliff Garten. Brent Kelley remarked that the terminal prioritizes traveler convenience while embracing contemporary design.
