Constitutional Expert Endorses Nationwide Rent Cap in Germany

Thorsten Kingreen, a professor of public law, social law, and health law at the University of Regensburg, has authored a legal opinion concluding that a nationwide rent cap (Mietendeckel) is compatible with the German Basic Law (Grundgesetz). The model, proposed by the Left Party (Die Linke), would limit rent increases depending on local housing market conditions and could even reduce existing rents in some areas. Kingreen was commissioned by the Left Party's parliamentary group to assess the constitutionality of such a measure.
