Conrado Krainer Blends Archival Photos and AI to Explore Memory and Trauma

Conrado Krainer's artistic work encompasses a range of techniques, including analog photography, digital methods, mixed media, and AI reconstruction, resulting in images that challenge certainty and exist in a space between reality, imagination, and decay. His current project, "To Remember and To Forget," merges archival photographs from the early 20th century with the dream narratives of individuals who lived under the Nazi regime in Germany. By cutting, layering, and reconfiguring these images before inputting them into AI systems based on textual dream descriptions, Krainer creates works characterized by fragmentation and instability. Recurring dream motifs, such as "I dreamed it was forbidden to dream, but I dreamed anyway," highlight the series' conceptual depth. Floral elements serve as reflections on time and fragility, while the use of black-and-white photography removes temporal clarity. Many pieces exhibit scratched surfaces and distressed textures, resembling damaged artifacts. Krainer's daily practice involves instinctive image gathering, meticulous editing, and embracing chance. He is also investigating immersive approaches that involve projection and spatial experiences.
