Component Cost Surge Forces Notebook Makers to Reconsider China Exit

economy-finance · 2026-10-09

According to TrendForce, a market research company based in Taiwan, notebook manufacturers are increasingly considering moving production away from mainland China due to escalating component costs. The firm forecasts that the proportion of global notebook production outside mainland China will decrease from approximately 24 percent in 2025 to 21 percent this year, eventually falling below 20 percent by 2027. In a report published on Thursday, TrendForce indicated that brands are reevaluating the trade-off between manufacturing efficiency and supply-chain diversification in light of changing policy and cost factors. This strategic shift occurs as the PC sector prepares for weakened consumer demand linked to rising component prices. In recent years, leading laptop manufacturers have expanded production beyond China to mitigate trade tariffs and geopolitical tensions.
