Colorlib's 2026 Guide to 28 Free WordPress Themes

Colorlib has published its annual roundup of the best free WordPress themes for 2026, testing 28 themes across multiple categories. The list is led by Astra, Kadence, Blocksy, and GeneratePress, all of which have been updated within the last year and have over a thousand active installs. Each theme was installed on an identical test site with the same content and measured using Google Lighthouse on mobile to compare page weight. GeneratePress was the fastest at 277KB with a score of 99/100, while Hello Elementor was the lightest at 223KB but requires the Elementor page builder. The guide also includes four paid themes for users who need more features: Divi, Avada, Astra Pro, and Blocksy Pro. The article provides niche-specific recommendations for blogs, business sites, online stores, and portfolios, and includes a FAQ section addressing common questions about switching themes, backups, and mobile-friendliness. The guide emphasizes checking the last update date and install count as indicators of theme reliability, and warns against using nulled premium themes due to security risks.
