Collin van der Sluijs' 'Wanderland' Opens at Joy Machine and Vertical Gallery in Chicago

Collin van der Sluijs presents 'Wanderland,' his sixth solo exhibition in Chicago, marking a decade-long partnership with Vertical Gallery and his first show at Joy Machine. The exhibition features a new body of work developed over two years, including large mixed-media paintings, intimate drawings, and skate decks. The title combines 'wander' and 'wonderland,' reflecting the artist's dreamlike ecosystem. Van der Sluijs blends oil paint, acrylic, watercolor, and other media, drawing on his Dutch heritage and street art background. The works address loss, grief, and nature's therapeutic power, with a lighter tone following darker pandemic-era pieces. During preparation, the artist broke his ankle, forcing him to work horizontally. He also spent time outdoors making small works on paper after a friend's death. Vertical Gallery published a book, 'Wanderland: 1991-2026,' celebrating the collaboration. The exhibition runs July 10 to August 22, with an opening reception on July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m., where the artist will be present.
