Coil Kazuteru Matumura turns hidden timber sheds into shared kitchen in Osaka

Coil Kazuteru Matumura Architects has transformed two abandoned timber structures in Iguchido, Ikeda, Osaka, into a shared kitchen and gathering space called Ichizu. These buildings, which were once used by the client's grandfather for short stays, had fallen into disrepair for years. Rather than tearing them down or completely restoring them, the renovation preserved the weathered corrugated steel exterior to honor the site’s history. It also incorporated modern materials like custom timber joinery and stainless steel. This project is the initial step in a broader plan to reopen a family property along the historic Nose Kaido road. Guests reach the kitchen by walking through the main house and storehouse, with Wells Garden and an antique shop nearby. Future plans include adding another kitchen by the main house. "Ichizu" reflects unwavering commitment, and the studio also developed branding for Ichizu, Wells Garden, and the antique shop. The client participated in the Ikeda Women’s Network program and received an IWN Challenge Grant from the City of Ikeda.
