Cody Cutter's Raw Street Photography Captures Authentic New York

Cody Cutter has been photographing New York since 2017, moving to the city in late 2018 and dropping out of university to learn on the streets and in the studio. Using a Leica M6 with a 28mm lens and a flash that has been on for three years, he shoots on Ektachrome 100 slide film, embracing its technical limitations like slow shutter speed and motion blur. His subjects are ordinary New Yorkers, especially elderly people who appear worn by the city. Cutter works in close, frontal compositions, entering people's space without aggression. He has been kicked, insulted, and spat on but continues, viewing each shot as intentional. His work is not nostalgic but a conscious choice to capture a visceral, abrasive quality.
