Coda: Reenacting an Exhibition Revives GDR Music Art at KVOST

KVOST – Kunstverein Ost in Berlin presents 'Coda: Wiederaufführung einer Ausstellung' (Coda: Reenacting an Exhibition), a reenactment of the 1980s touring show 'Musik in der Bildenden Kunst der DDR' (Music in Visual Art in the GDR). Curated by Thibaut de Ruyter based on a concept by Hans-Jörg Schirmbeck, the exhibition features nearly fifty works from the original 100-plus, all but one from the ifa depot in Stuttgart. The original toured L'Aquila, Paris, Vienna, Bucharest, Duisburg, Kuwait City, and East Berlin. Works span 1963–1988, showcasing techniques like drawing, etching, screen printing, and watercolor, and depict genres from classical to pop. The project is part of the 'Publik Machen' series examining the Zentrum für Kunstausstellungen der DDR (ZfK), whose graphic design archive was transferred to ifa in 1991. Partners include ifa-Galerie Berlin, Schloss Biesdorf, Prater Galerie, Galerie im Turm, and robotron-Kantine Dresden. Funded by the Capital Cultural Fund and Wüstenrot Foundation, the exhibition opens March 7, 2026, 18:00–21:00.
