Climate Clock: Permanent Art Trail in Oulu Highlights Arctic Warming

Climate Clock is a permanent public art trail across Northern Finland, part of the Oulu 2026 European Capital of Culture programme under 'Cultural Climate Change'. Curated by Alice Sharp, it features seven site-specific artworks by Finnish and international artists, created in collaboration with geologists, glaciologists, biologists, archaeologists, and snow hydrologists. The trail addresses the disparity between human and natural timeframes, especially relevant as Oulu experiences Arctic warming four times faster than the global average. Works include Ranti Bam's eight black stoneware vessels at the Kierikki Stone Age Centre, Antti Laitinen's twisted tree branches and lichen spheres in Kiiminski, Takahiro Iwasaki's tar barrel with snowflake models, Rana Begum's granite and marble sculptures evoking glacial ice, SUPERFLEX's pink marble sculpture with a ten-year sound installation, Gabriel Kuri's risk-assessment-colored road markers, and Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen's touring mechanical clock. The trail runs through the Oulu region, with the final work to rest at Hameenlinna Art Museum in June 2027.
