Claudia Moreno's 'Gender Quota' Documents Women in Mexican Politics

Mexican photographer Claudia Moreno, born in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, is developing her project 'Cuota de Género' (Gender Quota) under the Mexican Art Creators National System (SNCA). The project documents women's entry into Mexican politics through gender quotas since 2006 legal regulations. Moreno paused commercial photography and editorial management to focus on this political reportage. Her practice also includes video works. Influenced by Rineke Dijkstra, Richard Avedon, Martin Parr, and Teresa Margolles, Moreno explores expectations placed on women, using her own body to challenge norms. Her 'Stopping Time' project, started in 2017, will conclude in 2027 after a decade. 'Gender Quota' has been shown only in Mexican institutions and reached Italy via non-profit initiatives. Moreno attended her first political event in December 2017, deciding to focus on all women in various roles, not just candidates. By 2023, she leaned toward an Anna Fox/Martin Parr storytelling style. Her series 'Imagining a Crime' was created during a dangerous period in Tijuana, featuring late actor Paco Mufote and artist Roberto Romero Molina, and was included in the 2006 Baja California Photography Biennial. Moreno also produces fanzines, including 'Representation' (2025), displayed in Tecate and upcoming at Cecut organized by Border Collage Collective.
