Clap Studio and Homapal Critique Selfie Culture at CasaDecor 2026

architecture-design · 2026-05-14

Clap Studio has partnered with German metal-surfacing manufacturer Homapal to create "The Sanctuary of the Self" at CasaDecor 2026 in Madrid. The installation transforms a conceptual bathroom into a critique of selfie culture and digital overexposure. With approximately 93 million self-portraits taken daily, the work addresses the shift from private grooming to performative external validation. Reflective Homapal surfaces create a hall of mirrors effect mimicking social media feedback loops. Textual interventions like "This is also you" and "Still you" appear on panels, interrupting the search for a perfect reflection. A bathtub and two basins reference the Narcissus myth, with water kept in constant motion by a custom musical composition, preventing clear reflections. The installation uses high-pressure laminates and metal textures as a "skin" to influence mental states. Set within CasaDecor's historic framework, the project uses the bathroom—the most intimate room—to critique global habits and promote introspection.
