Cinémathèque française Honors Jean-Paul Belmondo with Archive Exhibition and 35-Film Retrospective
Five years after his death, the Cinémathèque française presents Belmondo, le Magnifique, an exhibition of personal archives, posters, costumes and previously unseen photographs, accompanied by a retrospective of thirty-five films, running from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027. Curated by Clémentine Deroudille, who also edits the accompanying catalogue published by Albin Michel, the show draws on material kept by the family and collections, with personal archives revealed for the first time by Belmondo's son Paul. It traces a double career: Belmondo as the herald of the Nouvelle Vague in films by Godard, Truffaut and Melville, and as the biggest popular star of French cinema in the 1970s and 1980s, working with de Broca and Lelouch and in large-scale action productions where he refused stunt doubles. Across more than ninety films, the exhibition follows him from his beginnings in the mid-1950s through to his stunts. Screenings are joined by encounters and conferences. The Cinémathèque française is located at 51 rue de Bercy, 75012 Paris, near Métro Bercy (lines 6 and 14), and is open Monday to Friday 12h-19h, Saturday and Sunday 11h-20h, closed Tuesday; admission is 14 €, reduced 11 €.
