Cindy Sherman's Fabric Matrons Debuts at Hauser & Wirth London

exhibition · 2026-10-06

This year, Cindy Sherman celebrated her 72nd birthday, and her latest exhibition, Fabric Matrons, is currently displayed at Hauser & Wirth in London until 23 December. The new works build upon her earlier Hollywood/Hamptons series (2000–2002) and the Socialite series from 2008, which launched shortly after the global financial crisis. The concept originated in East Hampton, where Sherman, who owns a house and studio, was inspired by a heavily airbrushed magazine feature of a famous model, also 72. She acquired fabrics from Moon Fabrics in Midtown Manhattan and received access to Chanel's archives, which provided 1990s jewelry and unique tweed samples. Sherman fashioned these materials into flowing caftans and headscarves, integrating them with her backdrops and furniture. Her collection of wigs, masks, and makeup began in a Broadway novelty shop in the 1980s. Some faces are airbrushed smooth while others highlight wrinkles. Sherman, who has shared distorted selfies on Instagram for ten years, believes aging renders women "a little bit more invisible" and reflects her characters' neuroses, which she admits may mirror her own. Tributes from Hans Ulrich Obrist, Eva Respini, Sofia Coppola, and Chanel's Yana Peel accompany the exhibition, with Respini praising the Untitled Film Stills (1977–1980) as one of the most important artistic contributions of the 20th century.
