Christopher Myers Unveils First Mosaics at Flatbush Subway Station

In Flatbush, Brooklyn, artist Christopher Myers has unveiled four mosaic panels made of glass tiles at the Church Avenue subway station, honoring the area's theatrical heritage. The artwork, named "If you don't want your children to know the truth about life don't send 'em to the theater," was revealed in March 2026. Part of the MTA Arts & Design collection, which features nearly 400 public artworks, these mosaics depict six figures influenced by Afro-Caribbean carnival customs, including stilt walkers from the West Indian Day Parade. Following an open call in November 2023 that attracted 306 entries, the MTA commissioned Myers, who dedicated three months to studying Flatbush's vaudeville history and Afro-Caribbean migration. The mosaics were created by Mosaicos Venecianos de México in Cuernavaca, requiring 13 months for production and two weeks for installation. Myers, who has showcased his work at the Guggenheim and Studio Museum, regards the subway as "the most democratic space" for art. The MTA allocates one percent of renovation budgets for artistic endeavors. Currently, Myers is working on four more mosaics for the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
