Christopher Kane Makes Mulberry Debut with Axe-Inspired Spring/Summer 2027 Collection
Christopher Kane, appointed to lead Mulberry in March, presented his debut collection for the British brand during London Fashion Week. The Spring/Summer 2027 show was built around the theme of axes and tree maintenance, with Kane stating, "The axe was fundamental." He designed bags named the Chop, inspired by axe sheaths, and the Rocker, featuring a curved bottom. The collection incorporated references to football casuals from Kane's Glasgow upbringing, including scuffed sweatshirts with the Mulberry logo. Materials included white leather and concrete grey, cut paper-fine for coats, skirts, and boxy jackets. The Kanes drew on Mulberry's 1980s home-line prints from wallpapers and lampshades, as well as country checks and school uniforms. They utilized the Bayswater bag's flap as a recurring motif, notching its crenellations into leather coats, skirts, and jumpers. The collection was assembled in two months, with the Kanes working alongside sister Tammy and dog Bruce Tito. Mulberry's bag production takes place at the Rookery factory in Somerset, the UK's largest luxury leather goods manufacturer. The collection was compared by one commentator to Marc Jacobs' 1998 debut for Louis Vuitton. The show took place in London, with photography by Alexandra Waespi.
