Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 'Air Package on a Ceiling' Realized at Gagosian London

Nearly sixty years after Christo and Jeanne-Claude first conceived the idea, 'Air Package on a Ceiling' has been realized for the first time at Gagosian London. The installation forms the centerpiece of the exhibition 'Christo: Air,' which revisits the artists' fascination with making the invisible tangible. The work was originally conceived in 1968 for the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia but could not be realized due to technical limitations. Lorenzo Giovanelli rediscovered the scale model in Christo's studio. The exhibition includes early works, archival materials, and the monumental indoor installation, which is suspended just above head height and occupies the full volume of the gallery space. Vladimir Yavachev, Christo's nephew and Director of Projects for Christo and Jeanne-Claude, noted that the work remains contemporary and that the room feels as if it is breathing. The exhibition explores how wrapping transforms perception, a concept that evolved from early wrapped objects to large-scale environmental interventions like the wrapped Pont Neuf and Reichstag.
