Christine Borland, Scottish artist probing medical ethics, dies at 60

Christine Borland, a Scottish artist celebrated for her explorations of medical history, colonial impacts, and ethical dilemmas, has passed away at the age of 60. In 1994, she held her inaugural solo exhibition, From Life, at Glasgow's Tramway, showcasing a human skeleton obtained through a medical supply catalog. Throughout her career, Borland presented around 60 solo exhibitions and took part in over 200 group shows. Her works often featured simulated patient manikins in vitrines and video installations, delving into themes of the uncanny and the replication of societal biases. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 2007, she displayed skeletons on glass shelves at Tate Britain, dusting them with white powder before removing the bones. Borland graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in Environmental Art in 1987 and obtained an MFA from the University of Ulster in 1988. She later taught at Northumbria University, where she established the Cultural Negotiation of Science research group and collaborated with artist Brody Condon on projects related to human body donation.
